There are five villagers you can recruit to Old Haven to unlock the It Takes a Village achievement: Nayr, Tanuki, Sylvie, Ziggy, and Jason.

Nayr and Tanuki will give you potion recipes in exchange for materials. Sylvie will also reward you with materials when you bring her new cards at her request. Be sure to check in with them frequently for new requests.

There are also two additional character interactions I’ve included here for completeness: Mary and Jinn. Mary has been included here because she will give you free items, and the Jinn will give you a potion recipe.

Nayr – Deep Dark Forest

Nayr is the first villager you can recruit. You can find Nayr in the Twisted Woods of the Deep Dark forest. On the way to Baba Yaga’s House you’ll encounter a red barrier and some aggressive mushroom enemies.

Head south to find Nayr.

Next time you return to Old Haven you can find Nayr standing to the left of Granny’s house. Nayr will occasionally request materials in exchange for a potion recipe. The recipe you receive appears to be random.

Tanuki – Fairy Forest

Tanuki is in the Entrance of the Fairy Forest right before entering the next area. You will see a tent with a screaming pot of oil on a fire.

Use a water bomb or ice potion on the fire to save Tanuki. Tanuki will share the Minor Cone of Vines potion with you.

After the cutscene you can return to Old Haven and find Tanuki in the center of the village by a tree. Tanuki will occasionally request materials in exchange for a potion recipe. The recipe you receive appears to be random.

Sylvie – Deep Dark Forest

You’ll find Sylvie in the Entrance of the Deep Dark Forest. Past the water missile tower is a gate that requires 5 silver cards to unlock.

Head down the stairs and talk to Sylvie in the ruins.

When returning to Old Haven you’ll find Sylvie standing by the Hunter’s cabin. Sylvie will occasionally ask you to bring her a new card and reward you with materials.

Ziggy – Desert

You can find Ziggy in the Sphinx’s Rest area of the desert. When you enter the area head directly north.

Ziggy does not have a request and will head immediately to your village. You can find Ziggy to the right of Granny’s house, near Sylvie.

Jason – Tundra

Jason is in the Ice Fields on a cliff to the north. The ramp to reach him on the cliff is directly before the exit to the Temple of Time area. When you greet Jason he will ask if you can procure some yeti fur.

You can find the Yeti in the Temple of Time area in the top northeastern corner of the area. When you enter the Temple of Time area head directly north until you hit the northern border before heading east.

Speak the yeti and Luna will politely ask for some fur. Helios will hint that you can use a potion with Metal properties to cut some fur.

I used the Iron Spear potion and received six clumps of fur.

Return to Jason and he will be recruited to Old Haven.

Next time you return to Old Haven you can find Jason standing in front of the Inn.

Mary – Old Haven

Mary lives in the village and is an unmissable part of the story. After the Curds and Whey quest you can find Mary hanging out by the forge. Check in with her occasionally to receive free items.

Jinn – Desert

In the Entrance to the Desert you’ll find a set of ruins with a shiny mound on which Luna will comment. If you try to interact with it then Helios will give a hint about digging it up front underneath.

Use an earth potion with the ground quality (such as Minor Rock Bomb) to reveal a bottle.

Interacting with the bottle starts a cutscene with Jinn, who will initiate an attack.

Notice that the bottle has a swirling wind effect that seems to be sucking the air. Avoid the attacks and lure Jinn near the bottle to recapture it.

Release Jinn one more time to receive the Ice Cone potion recipe.
