Phasmophobia is an Early Access release and does not have an ESRB rating. It will likely be rated M for Mature Audiences.

Last weekend I overcame my avoidance of horror games and celebrated Halloween via Phasmophobia. The Early Access release has been wildly successful this month, allowing friends to play together as ghost hunters to collect evidence of paranormal activity. The goal is to identify the spirit present in the house.

There are lots of tools to collect evidence and ward off ghosts: thermometer, UV light, Spirit Journal, Spirit Radio, Crucifixes, and more. Starting off as rookies with no equipment was rough for a while. We had one dim flashlight to share between us and not enough money to buy more. Combined with the fact that we arrogantly skipped the Tutorial, it was an entertaining ramp up period.

Things I love about the game:

  • In-game Journal. It has write-ups on all the various spirit types that make very interesting read.
  • Deduction process. Narrowing down a “suspect” with the Journal feels super rewarding!
  • Juxtaposition of janky graphics and totally terrifying scenarios.
  • Cooperative multiplayer. If you’ve read my Ghost of Tsushima: Legends write-up then you’ll know I like playing multiplayer games where you work towards a common goal.

Overall I highly enjoyed my Phasmophobia experience. It was the perfect way to celebrate Halloween, and I became braver as the game progressed. Looking forward to seeing the finished game on release!
