Potions: A Curious Tale is currently not rated by the ESRB. It is developed by Stumbling Cat and is available on PC.

This weekend I’ve been playing Potions: A Curious Tale, a witchy adventure where you meet fairy tale characters and craft potions. I heard about the game through TikTok in an International Women’s Day post by the creator. I’ve been having so much fun that I restarted the game after a few hours in so that I could write a walkthrough!

The game follows an aspiring potions master named Luna. Luna is on a journey to learn new potion recipes and discovers hidden secrets. The core gameplay is to collect materials, craft potions, and use your wits to overcome both puzzle and battle scenarios. Potion crafting is a simple but effective system where you combine any three materials. You can craft different types of potions by selecting materials that have the desired balance of elemental properties.

Things I love about the game:

  • The vibes! The art style is charming and unique, and I feel cozy while playing.
  • The crafting system. At a certain point you can unlock any potion recipe by experimenting with different material combinations, or you can find new recipes by completing missions.
  • The map variety. There are several locations you unlock throughout the game, and each location has its own distinct feel and value.
  • The use of environmental elements. There are usually clever ways to win battles without needing to use your potion stock.
  • The humor. The dialogue has funny moments that are referential to classic games.
  • Collectibles! I’m a sucker for collectibles, and this game has a card system where you can solve puzzles to find different types of cards. The cards are references to mythical gods and creatures across a variety of cultures.

I’m 4 hours into the game (not including my restart time) and expect I’m about one quarter finished with the story mission, so I’m estimating 20-25 hours of total gameplay to finish the story and find all the collectibles. The missions have been interesting so far, and I’m excited to see how the story progresses.

Luna talks to a mysterious person named Nayr.

Overall I’ve highly enjoyed Potions: A Curious Tale, so much so that I even started a walkthrough! I’m looking forward to seeing more from Stumbling Cat in the future, and I hope to continue to see more women-led games in the new releases list.

Have you played the game yet, or are you interested in playing it? Let me know in the comments!
